Remember that time when I wanted to be all smart and political and help inform my fellow mamas about the upcoming election? AND I was moving into the Natural Urban Home that very same weekend? Yeah… I did that. And now I  have completely overextended myself. This move has been tough. I have been physically and emotionally exhausted every day this week and there is still so much to do to get us completely settled in the house. AND there are still a fair amount of outstanding projects that need completing in and around the house that I have to either supervise or be on hand for as well this coming week. So I must apologize to all of you for promising more than I can deliver right now. I just can’t research and write the posts about the parties and their platforms. If we had another month and...

Why oh Why do we do what we do…

Why oh Why do we do what we do…

This weekend I realized something. I am a purist. Kinda… Let me explain. I attended my third blogging conference this weekend. It was the inaugural Blogwest 2012, the brainchild of my friend Felicia Dewar and a much-needed convergence of bloggers, sponsors, and experts in the social media and blogosphere world for Western Canada. In September of 2011 Felicia and I both attended the ShesConnected conference in Toronto and it was very clear then that western Canadian bloggers as a whole were both missing and also not being targeted by brands and sponsors. I am positive that it was after this conference that Felicia’s wheels started to turn and that weekend, the beginnings of what would become BlogWest sprouted in her head! At the time, I was quite excited about being invited to ShesConnected. I truly believed that connecting with brands and sponsors was what I wanted and needed to...

Irony and an Arrow

Irony and an Arrow

Do you know what sucks and is also kind of ironic? I am attending a blogging conference this weekend, the inaugural Blogwest 2012 AND I am also suffering from a seemingly unending case of writer’s block! I seriously have about 10 posts sitting in my drafts folder that I started writing, got to a certain point and then just sort of lost steam. And this is starting to really piss me off! I think it is because my brain is so full of a lot of other life events right now. Selling our house, building the new house, closing the store, getting the new site up and running, prepping the family and business tax returns (whoohoo fun… NOT!!), and packing, I really have to start doing more packing. All of this has left me feeling like I may be neglecting my space and my readers here on my blog. BUT… What...

This week is a bittersweet one for me. Sunday night at midnight I closed the Natural Urban Mamas online boutique. It was a decision that was a long time coming and one that was and is the right thing for me to do for myself and for my family. But that is not what I want to write about today. Today I want to tell you about this journey, this chapter in my life and what it has meant to me. In the summer of 2007, I was a new mama with a six month old (adjusted premature age) baby boy and I was struggling. He was SO tiny and I was so new to this. I kind of knew what I wanted to do and what I needed to do as a parent, but I had no idea where to go for advice and support from like-minded mamas....

it is all up here in my head

I swear I am writing. (And not just taking silly iPhone pictures all day!) See… Writing, writing, writing. OK. Here’s the thing… I have one seriously big flaw. (Yes, yes, I know I have more than that, but this is the biggie!) I have HORRIBLE time management skills. Like, truly AWFUL! I can guarantee you that I have not been on time for more than about 5 things in the last 5 years and these were probably all flights somewhere! And every day, I get these amazing ideas for blog posts and things I want to write about and I mentally take notes and I start to “write” the posts in my head and tell myself that when I get home and the kids are napping, I will write and post all these amazing things. And then I get home and the kids decide NOT to nap, or there...

a few of my “least” favourite things

A few things have me all riled up today. ~ When I am really, really wrong. Like having no problem swearing in front of my kids, saying that I don’t care if they swear as long as it is in context and then having them swear totally IN CONTEXTand realizing that I was WAY OFF BASE with this one. (Oops!) ~ Bad editing. Whether it be in a movie, a TV Show (Hello Once Upon a Time, I am talking to you), or a blog post. Especially a blog post. Spell Check people, know it, use it, love it! And please read and re-read your posts before you hit publish. ~ People trying to pass off someone else’s work, research or pictures as their own. Show some respect and give credit where it is due. (PS. Not only is this not very nice, it is often illegal! ~ Laundry. (Not...

A few things I am trying this month…

A few things I am trying this month…

Ok, I lied. I do have one goal for the next few months. I really want to get to my goal weight. I know, not very original right. But I have given myself some incentive… Once I have reached that elusive 135 pounds, I am going to reward myself with something big and beautiful. I want a new tattoo!! To help me get there I am giving up a few of my favourite things… No more milk, cheese or wheat products for this girl. This is hard for me to do, because I LOVE cheese!! (And already today, I had to spit a piece of Little C’s cheese string out because I popped it in my mouth without even thinking.) I am going with a 6 small meals a day routine, and drinking LOTS of water. And whoever comes up with the App that reminds me to drink a...

Toddlers and Heros!

Toddlers and Heros!

Call me silly, but I am SO, so excited tonight. A week and a half ago Annie at Phd in Parenting asked me to guest post for her awesome Carnival of Toddlers this month. And I really can’t lie, I may have done a few internal cartwheels when she sent me that tweet! Because here is the thing, Annie is kind of one of my heros. I have so much respect for her as an activist, a parent and a writer. I even sometimes think in my head when confronted with certain parenting and/or ethical questions…”What would Annie Do?” I had the immense pleasure of meeting her at Blissdom Canada this past October and she really is as awesome in person as she is online! So without further ado, here is the link to my guest post all about ‘Toddler Survival 101′! I do hope you like it and that you...

Finding my Blogging Bliss

Finding my Blogging Bliss

Two weeks ago I went to my first big blogging conference. And I learned a few things about myself. I am a writer. And a business woman. And a mom. And a wife. A friend. A fan. A partner. A very bad singer. And one hell of a One Man Wolf Pack. I was very excited about going to Blissdom Canada 2011. I bought my ticket the hour they went on sale and suspect that I might have gotten THE last one available that day!  And fresh off of my time at ShesConnected two weeks prior, I thought I had a ‘plan’ going into this one. Yet once again, what I came out with was so much more and not really what I had planned at all. And to be perfectly honest, in reading some of the other attendees posts after the conference, I have learned and discovered even...
